Starter Named

Coach Mike Singletary made the announcement this afternoon shortly before the team gathered for an afternoon practice. He said he came to a decision on Sunday and explained his reasoning to both quarterbacks individually. "We have decided Shaun Hill will be the quarterback," Singletary said. "They're both class guys. I talked to Shaun first and then I talked to Alex. This morning I brought them in together ... and had them understand why we made the decision, how important it is they continue to push each other." In the end, it was Hill's body of work, however slim, that earned him the job. He is 7-3 as a starter with the 49ers and crafted a 5-2 record in the second half of last season, including 5-0 at Candlestick Park. Singletary's decision to go with Hill represents a clear choice in style of play. Hill is steady and consistent, moves the chains and generally avoids damaging turnovers. He'll never wow anyone but he has a knack for remaining calm while leading the offense down field.
