Congrats to Brian Cushing. He has become the second Houston Texans linebacker in four seasons to win The AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Cushing was a runaway winner, receiving 39 of a possible 50 votes. Buffalo Bills safety Jarius Byrd finished second with six votes, followed by Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews with three, and Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo with two. This season, Cushing had 133 tackles, 86 of them primary as he helped the Texans get their first winning record. He also had five sacks, four interceptions and forced two fumbles, numbers that normally belong to a seasoned veteran. Buffalo safety Byrd finished with nine interceptions, picking off passes in five straight games at one point, but his cause was probably hurt by the fact he missed the final three games of the season.
